Success Story

“My Career in the wire industry started in 1980. Before coming to Owl Wire, I was working for an Automotive dealership on my way to my chosen career when the auto industry started to slow down. As one of the newer employees, I was soon laid off. I quickly found employment at Owl Wire, and I figured
I would stay at Owl Wire for a little while then go back to the auto industry.

My first job was operating a strander on the third shift. This lasted about two years, and I transferred to the bunch department for a first shift job. As the company grew new opportunities opened. A year or so later I went into the Quality Assurance department as an inspector. As the company expanded, Quality inspectors at that time were trained in all aspects of the operation to help solve issues on the production floor. This made Quality a good place to train for future advancement opportunities. I stayed in the Quality department for a few years and was soon promoted to Quality Assurance Manager.

I was fortunate the company offered to further my education. I went to night school for management leadership courses, ISO, and quality training. I was also able to select other areas of interest such as computers, basic programming, and even took classes in residential and commercial wiring. These classes and my mechanical background enhanced my ability to manage different areas of responsibility in the operation of the plant.

My career did not just include quality and wire. I assisted with the development of our current ISO system, Shop floor System, and Quality systems. I have worked on small projects to large tasks like a project leader for new equipment installs, new plant layouts, and plant decongestion. Once again, I have an exciting opportunity with the help of some key colleagues, to work on a layout for new equipment we are looking to bring in.

During my years here I have traveled quite a bit, met a lot of people, and made numerous contacts within the industry. Throughout the years I have filled in for several key staff members: Plant Manager of our Boonville plant, V.P. of Production, Sales, Scheduling, Supervision, and as a Plant Manager at the Canastota plant for a few years. In my current role of Quality Manager, not only do I lead Quality and Emulsions, but I am helping with plant floor Supervision, new hire orientation, and employee training.

After being employed at IWG-Owl for over 41 years, I am now looking forward to the next stage in my life. I have been happily married to my high school girlfriend for over 38 years and now bring my focus towards the grandchildren and some of my favorite hobbies such as hunting and camping.

I am not sure this would qualify as staying at Owl for “a little while!”
